The Journey
At the very start of year 11 pupils have to name a post-16 provision on their annual review paperwork (September), so it is very important that this is given a lot of thought and consideration leading up to this point.
At Bower Grove the journey to making Post-16 decisions starts as early as year 9, with a November parents evening at the school, providing an opportunity for parents to come in and get the conversation started.
This is also a good opportunity for parents to meet Mrs Cooper, our transition co-ordinator.
Every academic year in Term 4 we will hold a combined yrs. 9-11 careers and post-16 evening. At this Evening, Post-16 providers are also invited, and ex-pupils also come back to share their experiences.
To assist in this decision-making process:
1. Year 9 pupils take part in our Aspire programme where pupils participate in workshops learning about the armed services, digital media, police and forensic science, fire and rescue service, animal management and more.
2. Years 10-11 pupils get the opportunity to do Work Experience, this opportunity is a chance for pupils to find their own experience (supported by our work experience co-ordinator).
3. Year 11 pupils are supported in attending Friday morning taster classes at a number of the local colleges (organised by the school). All these activities are integral to helping shape and inform pupils post-16 and career choices.
As pupils reach year 11 the expectation from the Local Authority is that a provision is named. This is a mandatory requirement during the pupil's annual review in September.
Following this they need to start applying for courses and opportunities. It is recommended that pupils attend any of the post-16 provisions open day/evening events.
Currently, we have ex-pupils attending a range of post-16 provisions across the county. They study a number of different subjects including Motor Mechanics, Public Services, Hair and Beauty, foundation courses, work-ready skills courses and more.
